IRS TRANSCRIPTS & YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNT

Your tax records.
Within reach.

Need missing income information, a record of your filed return, or a look at your IRS balance? Start here.

This guide covers individual federal tax records. IRS transcripts are free.

BEFORE YOU SIGN IN

You’ll need an ID.me account.

IRS online access requires registration and identity verification through ID.me. If you already have an ID.me account, use that account and complete any additional verification requested. New users should have photo identification ready and follow the instructions on the IRS sign-in page.

Begin at IRS.gov using the account button above, then choose Sign in or create account. Complete the ID.me sign-in and verification prompts to reach your IRS Individual Online Account.

Your login stays with you. ASY does not need your ID.me password or verification codes. Download the records yourself and share the files with us through SmartVault.

Get a Wage and Income Transcript.

  1. Sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account through the IRS link above.
  2. Open Tax Records, then select the link for transcripts.
  3. Choose Wage and Income Transcript and the tax year you need.
  4. View, print, or download the document. Repeat for each year requested by ASY.
  5. Upload your downloaded transcript to SmartVault for our team to review.

To obtain a different transcript, follow the same steps and choose its type and tax year instead.

A helpful cross-check, not a complete set of records.

A Wage and Income Transcript contains only information reported to the IRS. Late or missing reports may not appear. Keep your original forms and business records, and tell ASY about income not shown on the transcript.

If a Wage and Income Transcript says “No record of return filed,” the income information may not have populated yet. This message alone does not establish whether you filed a return.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT RECORD

What’s the difference?

Transcript What it shows When it helps
Wage and Income Information reported on W-2, 1099, 1098, and 5498 forms. Generally available for the current and nine prior tax years. Checking reported income or locating information from missing tax forms.
Tax Return Most items from your original Form 1040 return and schedules. Excludes later amendments or account adjustments. Current and three prior tax years. Documenting what was originally filed, often for a lender.
Tax Account Filing information, payments, and changes after filing. Generally current and nine prior tax years online. Reviewing payments and IRS account activity for a particular year.
Record of Account Combines the Tax Return and Tax Account transcripts. Current and three prior tax years. Seeing the original return and subsequent account changes together.
Verification of Non-filing Confirms the IRS has no processed Form 1040-series return on record as of the request date. Providing a non-filing record. It does not prove that you had no filing requirement.

Availability depends on processing and the tax year. A transcript is a summary, not a photocopy of your signed return.

CHECK YOUR IRS ACCOUNT

See where things stand.

  1. Open the IRS account link and sign in using your verified ID.me account.
  2. Review your balance by tax year to see amounts owed.
  3. Review payments for payment history, estimated tax payments, and pending or scheduled payments.
  4. Use Tax Records for transcripts and prior-return information. Check available digital notices and payment-plan details as needed.

Your account also offers refund and amended-return status information and access to your Identity Protection PIN through your profile. See our ID PIN guide.

An account transcript covers one year and may not reflect the latest penalties, interest, or pending activity. If something looks unfamiliar, share the record or notice securely with ASY.

Cannot use the online account?

Tax Return or Tax Account transcripts: Use the IRS “Get transcript by mail” option or call 800-908-9946. Allow 5–10 calendar days for delivery to the address on file.

Wage and Income, Record of Account, or another transcript: Submit Form 4506-T ↗, following its instructions for the transcript, year, signature, and mailing or fax destination. The automated mail/phone service does not offer Wage and Income transcripts.

If your address has changed, follow the IRS address-update instructions before requesting delivery; transcripts are not forwarded. If you need an actual copy of a return, the IRS uses Form 4506, with a fee.

Need ASY to obtain your transcripts?

If you cannot obtain them yourself, ASY can request transcripts for you. Please allow approximately three weeks for ASY to obtain them. Contact our office to arrange the required authorization and tell us which tax years you need.
