Last month, we reported that the nationwide IRS e-file volume was estimated to be down about 30% nationwide as of January 31 (versus January 31, 2012). Most of that decline has now been made up, as many taxpayers who delayed filing have now filed.
However, nationwide e-file volume is still down as compared to last year. As of March 15, the nationwide e-file volume is down 5.1% compared to March 16 of 2012.
Looking solely at refunds issued by the IRS, the IRS reports that the number of refunds issued nationwide as of March 15 this year is running about 7.4% lower than the same point in time last year.
