March 28, 2012 – IRS Refund Status Information

The IRS released almost no refunds today. Tomorrow, we expect the IRS to release more refunds than usual, making up for the very few refunds that the IRS released today.
It is possible that the lack of refunds released by the IRS today was due to adjustments by the IRS in the filtering criteria the IRS uses to catch identity theft or other types of abuse.
As of today, looking at statistics of tax returns recently filed, here are estimates of the percentage of refunds not yet released by the IRS:
– for returns filed on 2/13 and prior, most refunds have been released by the IRS.
– for returns filed on 2/14 – 2/27, approximately 10% have not yet been released by the IRS.
– for returns filed on 2/28 – 3/13, approximately 15% have not yet been released by the IRS.
– for returns filed on 3/14 – 3/18, approximately 25% have not yet been released by the IRS.
– for returns filed on 3/19, approximately 30% have not yet been released by the IRS.
– for returns filed on 3/20, approximately 40% have not yet been released by the IRS.
– for returns filed on 3/21 and beyond, the IRS has released very few refunds.

The IRS released a relatively large number of refunds today. For the rest of the week, we expect the IRS to release smaller numbers of refunds.
