February 22, 2013 – IRS Nationwide E-File Volume Still Down

  • February 23, 2013

Earlier this month, we reported that nationwide IRS e-file volume was down as compared to the same point in time last year. Estimates showed that as of January 31 2013, IRS e-file volume was down about 30% nationwide versus January 31 2012.
Using more current estimates, industry sources are STILL estimating that the overall number of electronically filed tax returns is down over this point last year. Some estimates show that the nationwide IRS e-file volume for this season may be down as much as 10-12% nationwide as of this week of the filing season (in comparison to the same point last year).
What is unclear is why nationwide IRS e-file volume would be down at this point of the filing season. The good news is that many believe that the volume comparisons will improve as we move through the remainder of February and into March. Many believe that the taxpayers who delayed filing will still show up to file their tax returns.
