Getting Ready for Taxes

Now that you’ve survived the holiday season, tax season is looming. Make sure you’re prepared for the upcoming chaos with these helpful tips, and our handy guide.

  • Checklist — Make a list of all the people and places you should be getting some form of tax paperwork from and cross them off as they arrive. This includes:
    • Any and all employment, whether it will be a W2 or a 1099
    • Properties, whether you sold or purchased, for property taxes, interest, etc.
    • Financial Institutions, whether it be banks or investments, you will receive statements of interest, gains and losses
    • Loans: student, personal, etc. for interest amounts
  • Changes:
    • Make a list of any changes your tax preparer should be aware of, including:
      • marriage or divorce
      • death or birth
      • and whether or not you have a teen who turned 17 during 2010.
    • If you moved during the year, make sure anyone listed in your checklist has the current, correct address as soon as possible, to prevent delays in filing your taxes while waiting for corrected W2s or 1099s.
